Romantic things to do in Tarifa: sunset sailing with tapas on board

Tarifa is romantic, but...

Tarifa has something most places don't: the wind, the light, the Strait, that sense of being at the edge of the world. It puts you in a good mood just by arriving.

And yet most couples end up doing the same things: dinner in one of the old town restaurants, a walk along the walls, a drink with a sea view. None of that is bad. But if you've been looking for something genuinely different — the kind of evening that doesn't feel like every other evening — there's one plan that rarely disappoints.

Sunset on the Strait

We've been sailing the Strait of Gibraltar for 25 years, and there's still something that catches me every time: the afternoon light on the water as the sun drops towards Morocco.

At that hour, with the Levante wind blowing gently, the YEMAYA moves in near silence. No engine. Just the sound of the hull through the water and the sails full of wind. Africa on the horizon. Tarifa's silhouette behind you. And between the two of you, that particular stillness that only happens at sea.

Some moments don't need a photograph to stay with you. This is one of them. Though the photos always come out well too.

Private charter for two

For a real couple's experience, the option is to book the whole YEMAYA. €600 for the boat — just the two of you.

No other passengers. No strangers. The route, the pace and the tapas are arranged around you.

Fernando is discreet. He sails the boat, finds the calmest water of the day and gives you space to enjoy it. He speaks Spanish, English and French, so there's no language barrier to worry about.

We leave from Tarifa harbour. The trip lasts around 2.5 hours.

Tapas at anchor

There's always a moment when the anchor drops and the boat settles into quiet water — turquoise, calm, no other boats in sight.

Fernando brings out the tapas. Homemade tortilla de patatas, made that morning. Iberian ham. Cheese. Bread rubbed with tomato. Cold drinks, whatever you ordered.

No catering. No restaurant setup. Just proper food in a place you can't book a table at.

You can swim before eating, after, or whenever you feel like it. The Strait runs at 22–24 degrees in summer. Nobody is in a rush.

For anniversaries, proposals, or just because

You don't need a special occasion for this to be worthwhile.

That said, if you have an anniversary coming up, a proposal you're planning, or you simply want to do something that takes a little explaining (in the best sense) — the private charter is what you're looking for. A quiet anchorage, tapas on board, the sun going down over the Strait. You bring the rest.

If you'd like to give the experience as a gift, we have a gift voucher option so you can plan it at your own pace.
