Your safety is our priority
Tarifa Sailing Experiences S.L. is an active-tourism company registered in the Andalusian Tourism Registry (reference AT/CA/00504). We run recreational nautical activities by sailing along the coast of Tarifa, within the Strait Natural Park, applying specific measures to safeguard every guest.
Our activity complies with the Andalusian active-tourism regulations (Decree 20/2002 and Law 13/2011 on Tourism in Andalusia) and with the maritime-safety rules of the Spanish Directorate-General of the Merchant Navy. The vessel meets the required technical and safety conditions, is skippered by a qualified patrón, and we hold civil-liability insurance in force appropriate to the activity.
Safety measures for our guests
- Safe boarding control: before each trip the skipper welcomes guests and gives a safety talk explaining the safety rules, emergency procedures and proper conduct on board. Each participant signs a document with their name and ID, confirming they have received and understood the safety instructions.
- Approved life jackets: we carry life jackets for every guest, compulsory to wear according to the sailing conditions and the responsible skipper’s instructions.
- Operational emergency equipment: the vessel carries a first-aid kit, VHF radio, lifebuoy, flares, fire extinguisher and other regulatory items, checked periodically to ensure they work correctly.
- Professional supervision: our staff hold accredited training in maritime safety, first aid and guest care, ensuring guidance and watchfulness throughout the activity.
- Safe snorkelling: the equipment is checked before each use and disinfected after every activity. Guests receive prior instructions on technique, the limits of the area and rules of conduct in the water.
- Accessible information: the safety rules, recommendations and protocols are available to every guest before and during the activity.
- Environmental respect: we sail responsibly, avoiding sensitive areas and promoting safe practices that respect the marine environment of the Strait Natural Park.
Safety briefing: sailing
Before casting off, the skipper gives everyone on board a safety talk covering at least the following points:
- Life jackets: where they are stowed and how to put them on. Wearing them is compulsory whenever the skipper says so, and always for minors and non-swimmers.
- Conduct on board: follow the skipper’s instructions at all times, move carefully and holding on, and watch out for the boom and the sail manoeuvres.
- Safety equipment: location of the lifebuoy, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, flares and VHF radio.
- Man-overboard procedure: shout "man overboard" immediately, keep the person in sight and throw the lifebuoy; the skipper directs the rescue manoeuvre.
- Emergency communications: contact the maritime rescue service (Salvamento Marítimo) via VHF channel 16 or the emergency number 112.
- Weather and sailing decisions: the skipper decides on departure, route and, where necessary, suspending or shortening the activity depending on sea and wind conditions, which are especially demanding in the Strait of Gibraltar.
- Health and fitness: tell the skipper of any relevant medical condition (cardiac, respiratory, pregnancy, reduced mobility). Boarding is not allowed under the effects of alcohol or substances that affect safety.
- Minors: must remain under the supervision of a responsible adult at all times.
- Care for the environment: responsible sailing, no waste thrown into the sea, and respect for wildlife and the protected areas of the Strait Natural Park.
Safety briefing: snorkelling
Swimming and snorkelling are voluntary activities carried out from the boat while anchored in a sheltered cove, under the skipper’s supervision. Before entering the water the following points are explained:
- Checked equipment: mask, snorkel and fins are checked before each use and disinfected after every activity.
- Basic technique: how to fit and adjust the mask and snorkel, calm breathing through the snorkel and clearing water. No deep free-diving is practised.
- Flotation aid: life jackets or flotation devices are available. Their use is compulsory for minors and for anyone who is not a confident swimmer.
- Area limits: swim within the indicated area close to the boat, without straying, and follow the skipper’s instructions at all times.
- Buddy system: swim with a partner, signal before entering and leaving the water, and stay within sight of the crew.
- Health: do not enter the water after heavy meals or under the effects of alcohol; report any cardiac, respiratory or ear problems, or pregnancy.
- Environment and marine traffic: be careful of currents and other vessels; stay within the marked swimming area.
- Emergencies: the skipper supervises the activity and has a lifebuoy and first-aid kit on board; if needed, the maritime rescue service is contacted (VHF 16 / 112).
- Environmental respect: do not touch or remove marine wildlife or plants; snorkelling is done respecting the seabed and habitats of the Strait Natural Park.
